Identified as Major General Sir Denis Pack (thanks to the National Army
Museum) - does anyone have Pack's family tree?
In July 2006 we noticed a suitcase of family papers from
the late 1700's & early 1800's had just been sold at an Edinburgh Auction.
We are baffled as to how this one case of papers left our hands. They
were sold by a "Scott Ward" from Edinburgh I believe and were in his fathers
possession for 10-20 years before he died 6 years ago. As far as we
know, all papers leaving our collection were given to major institutions
such as the British Library and Edinburgh University Library - these papers
are from none of those sources. Fortunately these papers were bought
by the British Library; we have been in contact to point out why we
believe something is odd, but we are disappointed that such an institution
is prepared to purchase items that, we believe, left our family under what
appears to be very suspicious
circumstances. As such, unless proof is found that these papers left
our family correctly, we will not be donating further papers to the
British Library. There are a lot of papers here that may yet mention the loss
or theft. If Scott Ward is reading this, can you shed some
further light on this? Does anyone know who this family is or how one
case of papers left the primary Anderson line?
We are trying to find the family connection to William
Makepeace Thackeray. My Gt Grandmother was a Hilda Gwendoline
Thackeray. Her brother was Brig. Gen. Frank Staniford Thackeray (who
married late Barbara Gurtrude Fair, Winchester) and their father was
Alexander Thackeray. They are supposed to be "cousins" of W M
Thackeray (the Author or his grandfather, also W M)
At the NGA, Washington there is mention of a Kathleen
Bliss (London 1947) who is supposed to be a direct descendant of David
Anderson (1750) - what is the connection?
Also at the NGA, Washington there is mention that John Anderson (1st Viscount Waverley) is the Gt. Grandson of David Anderson (1750) - How?
